Zach Barnett@zach_barnettTom Herman is reportedly hiring a member of Lincoln Riley's coaching staff

Oklahoma special teams coordinator Jay Boulware has emerged into the leading candidate to coach the position and tight ends at Texas, according to my sources. Boulware has coached RBs and special teams at Oklahoma since 2013. In addition, he coached tight ends from 2013 to 2014.

Want to play a game? Say Jay Boulware heads to Austin. My first call is to DeMarco Murray.

That's not cool at all. Not so much about if Boulware leaves, but going to a major rival in the same conference. He's been around before Riley so has a lot of intel of the inner workings of the program and plays, etc.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems it's not very common for that to happen within conference.

Also seems like not really a promotion, so I wonder what's going on there, if maybe Riley is not all that sad to see him go. (Just speculating, because it seems odd, I know nothing about it.)

Ditto.
First thought was How did this happen for a lateral move.
Second thought was LR must not have been too unhappy to allow the exit.

Maybe some slight tension behind the scenes to make JB look and LR not to stand in his way???

Maybe consequences for losing McClellan (sp) to Bama, the RB out of Aledo who had been committed to OU for 2+ years...

Next shoe to drop will hopefully be moving Ruffin to some kind of off-field "analyst" or "consultant" role. Then you could do the following:

1) Shift Manning's role from CB to OLB, where he has more experience.
2) Hire a new CB coach. No idea who, but w/ Aranda leaving LSU, I'd sure make a call to Corey Raymond, LSU CB coach. He's an LSU alum & Louisiana native, but can't hurt to call...
3) Either shift Cale back to RB coach, or if he wants to stay at inside recievers, hire a new RB coach.
4) Put Beamer in total control of special teams.

I don't know where he'd fit in to a revamped coaching staff, but I'd also place a call to Joey McGuire. He was on Rhule's Baylor staff & was coach at Cedar Hill HS in TX for many years. He could serve the same role for Riley that Bobby Jack Wright did for Stoops - leveraging relationships w/ TX HS coaches to ID talent.

I agree with Clint as to why TexASS. Maybe to see into our
system? Herman has got maybe one year & we are standing in his way.

If he left today and we were playing them next week, I'd say he might have something he could share with the Whorns. Not enough info to justify a half million dollar job, but still maybe a tidbit.
Outside of that, Herman could just watch film of OU's games for the last couple of years and "learn" as much as JB would be able to offer up.

If Texas wins once or twice next season that's going to make the most logical reason why given that OU should still be the better team of the season.

maybe its a deal where you have a coach at OU in Boulware needing a spot to land and in Texas a head coach that will be lucky to survive another year and having trouble finding coaches that want to work for a lame duck.

the timing worked well for both of them, but it is funny reading on sites like Surly where Texas fans think they stole him from us.

...hope Riley is pursuing Joey McGuire.

Kind of surprised he wasn't hired as HC by Baylor.
Texass high school legend. Young, aggressive, dynamic coach. Would certainly aid Riley recruiting in Texass.

Lesson learned. Never hire a former Schlongwhorn. They inevitably defect and take state secrets with them.

Have to think Boulwsre was not good at special teams since he had the current perfect kicker on the bench until the kicker that missed several was arrested......:soonermad:

This is correct. Also Gundy is going back to RB coach and Beamer will have total control of ST as Brisket stated. It's yet to be decided if Simmons takes over coach all receivers or another inside WR coach is hired. The scuttlebutt right now is Simmons takes over all WR and Grinch wants another Defensive coach on the staff. There is also a rumor that Riley is considering Demarco Murray as a replacement for Beamer as RB coach which would change a lot of things. I'm working my sources trying to find out more this weekend.

You must of missed the 2019 season....we had crappy offense several games , TCU a non bowl team shut us down last home game and we had strange play calling many times, offense was not consistent , CeeDee bailed out the offense many times....

But I think that may be a fake poll.....

Someone on this MB earlier said LR should be HC and turn the offense over to Gundy....so maybe it was only 6.9999999999999billion people...

I think everyone acknowledges that the 2019 offense looked much different from the previous Riley offenses. That appears to be completely due to Hurts' limitations as a passer & an inexperienced OL. Riley did what all good coaches do - taylor the offense to the skillsets of his players.

I think the offense will still have some growing pains in 2020, but it should more closely resemble the Mayfield/Murray offenses than what we saw in 2019.

“I’ve been watching this (Texas) program from afar since the day I left there in the spring of 1997, and I’ve always had it in my mind that I would like to come back someday and help Texas win a national championship,” Boulware said. "I love everything about the University of Texas"

A guy who's been an Oklahoma coach for the past 7 years said this.

I read something on dirtburglars… the poster there got it the football brainiacs ... and I don't know where they got it... maybe from the babysitters boyfriend or something, so take it for what it's worth which probably isn't a whole lot … still what else is going on to day.

Grinch is trying to hire someone with ties to Texas high schools, someone that is trying to decide, come to OU where he can win championships or stay where he is happy. My first thought was Baylors McGuire but then the poster goes on to say....

...McGuire still might come anyway and without a set position to coach would work with different groups and be around mostly for recruiting.

Now for both to happen, someone else has to leave since there is only one opening

I wonder if there's any thought to Ruffin becoming a consultant, and not counting against the # of coaches.
