Arkansas and Tulsa open the 64-team 2019 NCAA softball tournament Thursday in Stillwater, Oklahoma. By Sunday, only 16 teams will remain in the hunt for the national championship, which will be awarded June 4 or 5 at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.

The history books provide some clues about what to expect over the wild opening weekend. Since the tournament expanded to its current format in 2005, national seeds have advanced out of regionals 84 percent of the time. The 16 seeds have all survived the past two seasons. Top-seeded Oklahoma has won two of the past three national titles, but only five No. 1 seeds have been crowned champion since 2005. Defending champion Florida State is looking to become the fifth school in the past 20 years to win back-to-back national championships. The Pac-12, mired in its longest national-title drought (since 2011), has three teams seeded in the top six. If you're looking for a sure bet, Alabama is the lone team to advance to every super regional since the tournament expanded in 2005.

But it's time to throw away the history book and start writing the next chapter. Here are some of the key storylines to watch.

All times Eastern.

Norman Regional, hosted by No. 1 Oklahoma

Like the long ball? Then Oklahoma, which is hitting a nation-best 1.90 home runs per game, is the team for you. How about shutdown pitching? Might we suggest Oklahoma, which ranks first in the nation with a 1.15 ERA? Great glove work more your thing? Well, once again we point you to Oklahoma, which leads the nation with a .986 fielding percentage. The Sooners, who have won two national championships in the past three seasons, have won their past 39 games and piled up victories against quality opponents all season. The most recent game Oklahoma lost was to UCLA on Feb. 22. The Sooners are led by Arizona State transfer and undefeated pitcher G Juarez (22-0, 1.26 ERA). Player of the year candidate Sydney Romero is batting .427 and has 17 home runs. Oklahoma, which has 24 run-rule victories, begins its postseason campaign against America East champion UMBC. Also playing in the Norman Regional are Big Ten and ACC at-large bids Wisconsin and Notre Dame, respectively. Notre Dame, which is led by ACC player of the year Cait Brooks, pulled off an early-season upset against Washington, and took a game off conference giant Florida State in March. Wisconsin posted victories against Texas and Arizona State this season. Badgers junior Kayla Konwent is batting .477, the best of anyone in the tournament. She also has 15 home runs.

Player to watch: Sooners sophomore outfielder Jocelyn Alo is a dangerous hitter, to say the least. Alo has 14 home runs this season, but she sent 30 balls over the fence last season. She sits third among Oklahoma players with 45 RBIs on the season.

Schedule

Friday
Game 1: Wisconsin (40-12) vs. Notre Dame (36-16), 7 p.m. (ESPN)

Game 2: (1) Oklahoma (49-2) vs. UMBC (30-22), 9:30 p.m. (ESPN2)

Saturday
Game 3: Wisconsin-Notre Dame winner vs. (1) Oklahoma-UMBC winner, 4 p.m. (TBD)

Game 4: Wisconsin-Notre Dame loser vs. (1) Oklahoma-UMBC loser, 6:30 p.m. (TBD)

Game 5: Game 3 loser vs. Game 4 winner, 9 p.m. (TBD)

Sunday
Game 6: Game 3 winner vs. Game 5 winner, 2 p.m. (TBD)

Game 7: Repeat Game 6 (if necessary), 4:30 p.m. (TBD)

Tulsa 0 Arkansas 0 after two.  Dulce vs Autumn Storms.

I really want to know who named her Autumn Storms.

I understand the game is on ESPN3.  I'm looking more at the end of the Big Bang Theory at 7.  Priorities are not always sports.

0-0 after 4

Watching softball can be boring.  I think the better pitcher lost.  But, NC---can they hit at all?
OSU 2
Tulsa 0 in the second
Steal and two out single in the first.  Pennington HR in the second.
South Florida 2South Carolina 1 4th
Pitching isn't as good as in the Ohio State/NC game.  Hitting about the same.
Boise State 4Stanford 0 in the 4th

“Watching softball can be boring.” Sybarite(taken out of context)

I love watching softball. outside of Football in the fall this is my favorite time of the sports year. The game which is so much faster than baseball. That I will not watch.

I don't know how either team got here.

Not a good day for the SEC.  Arkansas lost to BYU, 6-3, and is the first team to go home.

Houston beat A&M , 3-1.   South Florida beat South Carolina, 3-2.

Kentucky did win, 7-2 over Toledo.  Tennessee 8 Longwood 0.

Stanford 1 Boise State 9.    Well, Arizona State did beat Lipscomb, 4-3.

Texas is in trouble against Sam Houston State, 2-1, in the sixth.  Three hits.  Announcers said Texas had been 11 games without a HR.  Tech 3 Louisiana Tech 0.

Tiffany Thompson hit a two-run HR for Sam Houston State.  Texas has 4 hits, 3 BBs, only one run with three outs left to strike back.

Three up.  Three down.  Texas goes down 2-1.

I don't think this is why they got Mike White.  Ouch!

“The watching softball is boring” was taken from an earlier quote by “Sybarite”

I just replied and only used that part.

You know way more about the game than I for sure. I just love the speed of the game. I start watching in 2013. I like to watch all of the games these first two weekends they don’t show that many games here until this time of year.

These NCAA tournaments can be brutal. This tournment just started and already teams are going home. Arkansas is going home and BYU is about to join them. Texas lost their first game so they need to try to fight back from the loser bracket. [playing violin] .... BYU is fighting back; they might live to play another game ... Tulsa knocks BYU out. BYU is going home

I guess the SEc had to have something go right.  They've lost Arkansas.  South Carolina and  A&M are in the loser's bracket.  Cal Fullerton is leading Mizzou, and Colorado State is leading Auburn, and it could very well stay that way.  I see runs getting scored with those teams.

We have a couple of upsets brewing

Texas Tech is currently ahead of LSU 4-0 in the 4th
Louisville is slightly ahead of Northwestern 1-0 in the bottom of the 5th.

Assuming that OU advances then OU face whoever wins the louisville/Northwestern regional
