My cellphone provides me with articles of interest. Today it gave me a sports column from the Knoxville Sentinel suggesting that UTenn should cancel their 2020 game at OU because the Vols would not beat competitive in the game. John Adams, the columnist, suggests keeping the 2024 game and rescheduling the 2020 game to 2028.

Where I am all for good competition coming to Norman, I think this would hurt the Sooners chances of getting to the CFP. We pride ourselves with playing a strong nonconference schedule. Who could we get at this late date to replace the Vols with the same name recognition and power 5 conference affiliation? We can't depend on winning the Big XII alone to get us in the CFP. So we need a name opponent.

This would really hurt OU ... There is not, probably, a comparable school sitting out there with a open date on their schedule .. So Tenn's replacement would be a much inferior opponent.

Wow, how embarrassing for the Volunteers. Last time we played, just 4 years ago, it took NFL players Baker Mayfield, Sterling Shepherd, Joe Mixon, Samaje Perine, and Dede Westbrook 2 OTs to get a victory. And now their fans (or beat writers) don't think they belong on the same field with us? Talk about different trajectories.

They better not let their mighty SEC brethren know that they are scared to play a little old Big 12 school.

The SEC might kick them out of their clubhouse, or might change their super secret password and not tell them. At the very least it might make Finebaum and all of the ESPN apologist's heads explode while repeating..."can't comprehend the SEC is not all powerful, can't comprehend..."

Deny them the request and even if they don't show up, OU gets credit for the win and whatever SOS they can provide.

I sent the guy an email. He responded that the odds are OU will blow them out and that would set the Vols rebuild back a couple of years.

Below is his response to my email:

"That sounds good. But Tennessee has been mediocre or worst for more than 10 years now. Every year, it gets hammered by Alabama. That hasn't made it better.

Nor did it make Tennessee better to blow a 17-point lead against Oklahoma and Baker Mayfield.

UT's coach will be in his third year in 2020. He could be coaching for his job, and every win will count. He won't get a win in Norman.

I look at this without any emotional investment in the outcome. I don't care who wins games. I'm a columnist, not a fan."

Thanks for reading,
John.

What a numbnuts (John, not Walt).
So everyone cancels every game they are not favored to win?
The only games that actually get played are the ones the Vegas oddsmakers deem toss-ups?
What a numbnuts.

Edit: The good news is, "John", as a columnist, won't have a job writing about College Football.

Makes absolutely no sense . So a potential loss to OU is a problem and will set them back when they have to play the likes of UGA, UF, BAMA and LSU in a given year? Secondly, this is perfect timing, you’ll have a new QB under center while the WRs and TE will still be young and raw. And the defense will still be undergoing the rebuilding process. 2020 will be like the 1984 teams before the 85-88 run
