"Several coaches who have worked in support roles at Alabama have later moved into on-field coaching positions for the Crimson Tide. Among recent examples: Mike Locksley, hired as an analyst in 2016, he then became Alabama’s offensive coordinator and was recently hired as Maryland’s head coach. Former Tennessee coach Butch Jones was an analyst last season for Alabama. After he was fired as USC’s head coach, Steve Sarkisian joined Alabama in a support role for the 2016 season and served as offensive coordinator during the national championship game after Lane Kiffin left to coach Florida Atlantic. Reports have indicated Saban will rehire Sarkisian as offensive coordinator.
Last month, before Alabama’s semifinal matchup against Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, Saban told reporters those arrangements had often “worked out well for both” the coaches and the program.
“We have coaches who have a track record of being very, very good coaches, very productive, they make some mistake or get in some circumstance of situation that maybe creates this downward plummet but they still have a lot of positive values,” Saban said then. “We can get them in our program, maybe they learn a better way to do things. But we also can take advantage of the good things they know and they’ve done.”
I expect this is a big reason Bama hasn't been affected too much by all the coaching turnover they've had. Saban basically already has guys on staff who are ready to step in and continue The Process.

So, does Mike eventually become another Brent Venables and and ends up coaching a national champion with a defense that shuts down an opponent, maybe even OU?
Time will tell.

Time will tell. I re-read my post and it didn't come out the way I wanted it to. It read like an anti-Bob post......which was furthermost from my intentions .....so IT's GONE!
As the judge would say....."The readers will disregard this post" Last edited on Wed Jan 30th, 2019 11:31 pm by AllSooner

Ironically, he may now be closer to the field during games than he was as a DC at OU.
It'll be interesting to see how the Tide CB's handle playing 10 yards off the LOS. Last edited on Wed Jan 30th, 2019 06:53 pm by OUMonster

It's actually a brilliant move by Saban. Now he will know exactly what NOT to do.

I posted this right after Mike was fired, joking suggesting that it would me Mike's next gig. Looks like it has come true.

...and be assured buddy, I sincerely appreciate it!
I think Mike will get another chance, if he wants it.

Few people in SOONER fandom have had as much mud thrown their way than yours truly. YOU know that to be true.
But, remember when you called me the Great Santini?
You weren't far off, Jim
Critics have never really bothered me. I embrace my inner villain, and cOUldn't care less what friend or foe says about me. But guarantee I'll NEVER be boring!
IF yOU want to jump in there and bash Mike Stoops, hell go ahead. I release you from your vow.
To me he's history!
YOU & anyone else can carry that grudge to yOUr grave.
I'm watching the next man in the arena-ALEX GRINCH!
Hoping I can soon be singing his praises. Like that more than complaining.

Good thoughts. Mike is history. I'm looking forward to the next team.
We have so much to be thankful about the bright future. As sybil says ... the crimson colored glasses look really good.

It would probably say the Big 12 is just a pain in the butt to defend against WHEN you have to do it on a weekly basis. There's an astronomical difference between playing a spread principle offense after a month off than facing them every single week. It would also probably say that defensive front talent can mask a lot of issues on defense.

For Mike to rehabilitate himself, he will have to COMPLETELY change how he deals with his players. His coaching style could translate to the NFL, but college kids now will not put up with with his crap...

So, not only is Riley an elite signal caller, QB whisperer, and recruiter, he has now engineered a straight-up trade of Jalen Hurts for Mike Stoops. I didn't know it was legal to trade a player for a coach, but once again, Hot Rod Lincoln shows himself to be on the cutting edge of college football. Saban got schooled on this deal.
