When I first heard that the Titans were going after USC and Lane Kiffin, I thought it was a joke. Now that I understand the basis for their lawsuit I like it and actually think they can win and reap a pretty good payout for their problems. Plus, they can sure put anyone else on notice before they try to poach one of their coaches.
I am not a lawyer, but have probably read as much law as many lawyers. My guess would be that the state of Oklahoma has a very similar law as the Tennessee law the Titans are basing their suit on. Essentially, the law is there to protect the integrity of legal contracts between and among individual and corporations. The law basically makes it illegal for anyone to be a part of any cause for another entity to violate a viable contract with another entity.
That is what Kiffin and USC did in this instance. There was a valid contract between the Titans and their RB coach. USC and Kiffin was a party to the Titans RB coach violating the terms of his contract with the Titans. Under the law they are entitled to treble damages and punitive damages. The case was filed in Tennessee and is a jury case. Kiffin and USC will likely get taken to the cleaners.
What is so funny about this is that Kiffin has burned all his bridges in the State of Tennessee by the way he left the University of Tennessee.
This will be fun to watch as it plays out. My guess is that USC and Kiffin will wind up settling out of court and will both USC and Kiffin will write the Titans a very healthy check. Even more, I think it will [read that has already] driven a wedge between Haden and Kiffin. Pat Haden most likely won't put up with a lot from Lane Kiffin. It could sure be the start of nails going into the Kiffin USC coffin.
It can't happen to soon for me.

There is a legal doctrine called tortious interference with contract. A and B are parties to a contract, and C induces A to breach the contract. But C has a duty to B not to meddle with the contract, and so it is a tort ( not breach of contract) if C does so.
About 1985 Pennzoil won $billions (8 to 10 rings a bell) from Texaco when Texaco interfered with the contract that Pennzoil had with Getty to buy Getty or a bunch of Getty oil reserves. The suit was based on tortious interference with the Pennzoil/Getty contract. The law firm I worked for then represented Pennzoil (but not on a contingent fee basis).
Maybe if they have Lane Kiffin testify and be the smiling, charming rogue that he is, the Titans can get punitive damages.

| The President of USC must be so overjoyed that the Imbecile-in-Chief, i.e. Mike Garrett, left him with all this mess on his way out. I would imagine that Pat Haden probably called Kiffin into his office on day one, telling him something to the effect that he's on the shortest leash known to man, and that it won't take much for 'SC to pull the trigger and fire this most arrogant a-hole.
