Travis just finished his part on the Big XII media days. He is a very articulate young man and talks a really good game. The kid oozes confidence and intelligence.
I think that Travis is one of the most interesting kids OU has on it's roster. As many of you know, Travis was in the dog house coming into his first year where he had a chance to earn some playing time. He and Schmidty didn't get along and Lewis found himself in the Stoops dog house. There were rumors that Lewis might leave the OU program. It was close, but Brent Venables won out and started Travis in spite of his off season problems.
The rest is pretty much history. But, what I find so interesting about the Travis Lewis history is the fact that he came to understand that one has to do the work to earn ones way. In the years since all of that, I have heard Travis say all the right things and it is pretty evident that he now understands the errors of his past. He sings praises of his coaches and he is very complimentary of his fellow team mates. In essence Travis Lewis has grown up and is on his way to becoming a great player and a better person. Listening to Travis today made me think that he is a great team player who is going to go out and do everything possible to make sure his defensive team plays to the very best of their abilities.
I think that Travis is one of the best examples of what makes Stoops a very good coach. I don't think that Stoops is capable of bending in his efforts to make sure 100% of his kids give 100% effort in everything that they do and are asked to do. Personally, I think that is a great trait for a coach.

I agree. Seems like the chemistry is pretty good again this year.

A couple of years ago, I had it on pretty good authority that Brent was so disgusted with SOMETHING at OU that he had contacted Mangino about an open DC spot that year. Turned it down because the money was so bad. I wonder if it was because of run ins with Schmidt? The stories/rumors that Schmidt has power over starters/playing time over the years might be true and might have played a role in BV's dissatisfaction. Maybe Brent used the leverage of possibly leaving to get Travis on the field?
Admittedly, I don't know this for sure, but it sort of fits and connecting a couple of dots of behind the scenes football program chicanery isn't as dubious as predicting variables in a global warming or Keynesian economic model!
