- Dan Tapko 6-4, 225, 4.7 TE/DE Rockhurst, KS
So it’s been a while since a recruiting update, so let’s recap OU’s recruiting by position.
QB:
OU found their QB last fall, and Thompson’s done nothing to suggest that he won’t flourish under Josh Heupel’s development, he’s gotten better year over year at OU summer camps. Thompson should be about 6-3, 190 by the time he enrolls at OU with excellent mobility. Rivals isn’t ranking Thompson very high, but he will get a chance to show his elite talent level at the Under Armour ESPN game. When I watch the highlights of Thompson in the title game versus Jenks, it’s hard to not compare him to Pat White (clearly the lefty throwing motion is biasing that comparison). The play making, mobility, extend plays are all there. Both Thompson and Blake Bell bring considerable running game to the QB position.
RB:
I think that OU is done here, and the RB is a bit of a surprise since last fall the talk was all about Aaron Green and Malcolm Brown. Instead OU got Brandon Williams who had just an awesome junior year and is fighting Green for the number two RB rating in Texas. Williams is bigger than Green and faster than Malcolm Brown having elite homerun speed. Williams in that aspect provides a different threat at RB to Clay and Finch.
WR:
OU has two great verbals in Metoyer (best WR signed since Malcolm Kelly) and Jackson (badly under rated could easily end being an Iglesias type performer for OU). OU is probably done at WR unless DeAnthony Arnett or Tobias Singleton choose OU. Metoyer right now is the gem of the class. The type of dominant WR that OU has needed to sign.
TE:
Well since our last update, the TE update has gone through all kinds of changes. OU added Max Stevenson who is potentially the top TE in Texas, dropped Chris Barnett (who has had just a weird offseason. Dominating at camps, but changing schools and hints/references to all kinds of off the field problems), and then added Dan Tapko. Tapko looks like a possible H-Back/TE combo. There are already comparisons to Brody Eldridge being thrown around, but Tapko at least in HS shows a lot more play making ability at TE to go along with a very physical blocking presence. Two 4 star rivals prospects to go along with Haywood and Millard from last year. OU has reloaded at TE/Hback.
OL:
If there’s been an area of disappointment for OU in recruiting so far it’s been OL. OU lost Garrett Greenlea to UT, Matt Hegarty to ND, and finally this week Brey Cook to Arkansas. Those were the three top OL on OU’s recruit board. OU does have two verbals in Dylan Dismuke and Derek Farniok. Dismuke was the number one player that message boards were asking why OU hadn’t offered yet. OU offered in late May and Dismuke verbaled during this camp visit. Dismuke has the mobility to be a LT if he can continue to add strength. He has great mobility and a frame to carry in the 315/320 range. Farniok is something of a project/sleeper. He’s been to OU camps two summers in a row, and OU also got his verbal during camp week. Now for a sleeper/project, Farniok had offers from OU, Wisconsin, and Iowa (arguably the two best NFL OL factories in college football). OU (Patton) clearly know the kid’s work ethic and ceiling having coached him in back to back years. Farniok would seem to be slotted as a massive RT. Now, where does OU go from here in terms of OL recruiting.? At least one remaining scholarship is probably designated for the OL. I’d like to see OU go after a Juco OT. OU only has one redshirt freshman/sophomore OT in the program (Josh Aladenoye) with 4 Junior/Senior OTs (Mensik, Brandon, Jones, Stevenson) and 4 freshman/verbaled OT (Thompson, Williams, Dismuke, Farniok) so a 3 year JUCO OT would be ideal. If not a JUCO, OU could go after Texas Tech verbal Raven LeClark (6-5, 255 very similar to Darryl Williams) or Jamelle Naff (6-4, 300 OG from Del City). Either way unless OU signs a super blue chip JUCO or somehow lands a highly rated HS OT, OL recruiting is going to be considered something of a disappointment unless *
DE:
With Cooper Washington and Nathan Hughes, OU is done at DE. Washington is a tall rangy DE in the mold of Dan Cody or Brody Eldridge in HS (Eldridge looked like an awesome DE/OLB in HS). He’s taller than Auston English though they share the same tiny Texas town background. Nathan Hughes is already a college game ready size wise at 6-5, 260, and with a great senior year could establish himself as the top DE in Texas and possible top 10 player. Tapko could end up at DE down the road, but I don’t really see him getting away from TE.
LB:
OU right now only has one actual LB verbaled PL Lindley. Lindley is a versatile OLB that OU offered early. OU’s had strong back to back LB classes so it’s a smaller LB class this year, and OU is waiting on blue chip elite MLB Anthony Wallace. Wallace is a top ten player in Texas, and would firmly establish OU’s pipeline at Dallas Skyline. Franklin Shannon could be an another OLB/Safety hybrid for OU along the lines of Joseph Ibiloye.
DB:
I’m going to put both Brandon Carter and Danzell Williams because that’s where they are positioned for OU based on comments by other recruits. Brandon Carter verbaled to OU during summer camps working out at CB. Carter has good track speed and was an elite performer for his HS at WR last year. Danzel Williams could be a free safety or a CB for OU or a RB. It really just depends. Right now, OU’s DB class is missing an elite CB. OU lost out on Josh Turner to Texas, but there’s still Charles Jackson from Texas (5-10, 180, 4.5 arguably the best CB in Texas along with Tevin Mitchell) and Marcus Roberson from Florida (Willie Rodriguez has connections at his HS 6-1, 175, 4.5). I don’t think OU has room for anyone at safety, but at least one more CB if the right one can be found would be ideal.
DT:
Other than WR/TE, OU’s best efforts in recruiting show up at DT. Jordan Wade and Marquis Anderson are two of the top DTs in Texas. In fact, Anderson is fighting Desmond Jackson for the title of best DT in Texas. Wade is a great athlete who when finally dedicating himself to football has a very high ceiling. OU’s final DT verbal might be the best. Jordan Phillips from Kansas might be the next great Sooner DT (he will fight Metoyer and Williams for being the highest ranked recruit). He has the same kind of ceiling of Gerald McCoy. * Now if Phillips is switched to OL at OU, the OL recruiting class has their elite LT, but I’m not sure Jackie Shipp will let such an elite DT prospect switch positions. However, OU has signed/verbaled 7 DTs (last year Noble, Humphrey, Peterson, and Williams), so I figure at least one DT is moving to OL with most of the DTs kids being interior OL candidates.
Top 3 Targets: With so many verbals, OU probably at most can take 3 or 4 more players so the top Ten list is now 3. (top players that OU has a legitimate shot to land. This list will vary as kids verbal to OU and elsewhere and kids are added. The first top ten last year didn’t have Tony Jefferson, Kenny Stills, Austin Haywood, or Brennan Clay)
1. Anthony Wallace 6-0, 225, 4.6 MLB Dallas Skyline, TX. Looks amazingly like Curtis Lofton. Might be the best LB in Texas, debate is between Wallace and Steve Edmond. OU has been recruiting Skyline well, and I has teammate Shannon Franklin verbaled to go along with Corey Nelson and Mike Powell from last year. Wallace will look at most major powers before deciding.
2. DeAnthony Arnett 6-0, 175, 4.5 Michigan. The top national prospect ranking seriously considering OU right now. Arnett has been dominant in combines this spring and would seem to be the ideal 3rd WR commitment for OU. Big Ten and USC is also involved.
3. JUCO OT/Blue Chip OT? It looks like OU could use another top flight OL recruit.

Thanks for posting. Recruiting for me is a lot like making out my Christmas list as a kid. When I finally got some of the toys, they weren't always as great as I thought they were going to be, but the anticipation before Christmas was always exciting.
