The Mike Leach firing caused a recruiting frenzy in Prague, Ok. Denton Simek 6'6" 278 lb 4.65-4.7 40 yds. was back on the market. The fastest lineman left in the country according to ESPN. He was contacted by 16 schools in 24 hours, and was personally visited by 8 schools, OSU, Missouri, TCU, and Nebraska. Texas Tech line coach Henson was also in Prague, trying to stop the Red Raider hemorrhaging. Coach Henson trying to ride heard on the Tech verbals. When asked Henson said, that they had hoped to already have a head coach in place, he admitted that even he dosen't know, if he will have a job.
January 5, 2010 Nebraska line coach Barney Cotton flew into OKC and drove to Prague. Coach Cotton told Denton, that Coach Bo Pelini wanted him to look Denton in the eye to make sure OU had not made an offer. Coach Cotton said, that they cannot believe, that Oklahoma hasn't made this kid a scholarship offer! Coach Cotton told Denton, that Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini is holding a scholarship for him, and set up an official visit for January 15, 2010. This is Denton's second visit to Lincoln. Coach Cotton said, that Nebraska is recruiting speed, and they think, that they can add another 30 lbs, putting Denton around 310 lb without him losing a step. Coach Bo Pelini wants to try Denton at DE.
OU Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables has been texting Denton. Coach Venables stopped in Prague for a short visit with Denton and his dad on his way to Tulsa this week. He told Denton, that Coach Stoops, Coach Wilson, and himself love Denton, but Coach Stoops leaves it up to the position coach to make the scholarship offer. Coach Venables said, that he did not know what Coach Patton's problem is. He went on to say, that he wants Denton for the D-line, and will ask Stoops, if he can recruit him.
What I have found, through other sources is:
Coach James Patton has said, that his knocks against Denton Simek are:
1. Simek played at a small school 2A Prague. Coach Patton has said, that he likes his lineman 6"5" 350lbs. out of 6A and 5A schools, already coached.
2. Simek played both ways. Coach Patton has said, that he prefers his lineman to play only on one side of the ball, so that they can concentrate on the offense, that they are running.
This coaching philosophy seems stupid! Coach Bob Stoops has just went nuts over Ronnell Lewis. Doesn't Stoops understand, that Coach Patton would have never recruited Ronnell Lewis, because he played 8-man in Dewar, Ok., and played running back and linebacker. Coach Patton would not have recruited the Selmon Brothers, Rod Shoate, J.C. Watts, just to name a few.
Coach Patton's real knock against Denton Simek, is that Denton embarrassed Patton during football camp. Denton whipped with his quickness and speed all the lineman, that Coach Patton had bragged about before camp. Simek went up against Bronson Irwin 6'5" 355lb 5.4 40yds eight times with Irwin on offense. Simek could beat Irwin inside, or beat him with his speed rush outside, and get to the QB during pass blocking. Only once Irwin got a hold of Simek and held him out. It affected Bronson Irwin, where he dropped 40 lbs., trying to get quicker. When Simek pass blocked, he always had quick feet and stayed in between the pass rusher and the QB, and was never beaten. Simek was giving up 60 to 80 lbs to each man he was matched against.
I have heard other inside poop, that Coach Stoops and Line Coach Patton are having a "War of Wills." Coach Patton has taken a lot of heat for break downs in blocking assignments, especially backside blocking break downs. Patton is going to do things his way. Patton offered Daryl Williams a scholarship without talking it over with Stoops or the staff. Williams was way down their list, and he is another 5.6 40 yd lineman. ESPN says, "He can get out of his stance good!" They say this, when you are SLOW!
What the SIN is about the whole situation. When you talk to Denton Simek: He loves OU football. Denton bleeds Crimson and Cream. He would play his heart and soul for OU. Denton would rather die on the field, than lose a game for OU.

Something must be amiss or Ou would have accepted a verbal from this player.

i talked to my friend earlier today and he got about 20 offers since he opted out of tech. i am sure that lots of the schools i.e. unlv for example, called all of tech's committments hoping to get lucky. i also understand that chris wilson offered him after he went to msu. oh well, such is life. i hear that he is a good kid and like you say, he is a good get for arkansas.

| Do you have any insight as to why he chose Arkansas over Nebraska? With Nebraska's recent improvement they'd seem like the better choice.

Seems like players with academic issues can qualify for Arkansas easier than for OU. that is just a guess on my part. Don't know if that is the case with this player.

academics had nothing to do with it. Denton Simek qualified.
SD, saying things like this is how rumors get started. opinions are one thing, blind guesses are something else.

If he was a Sooner fan and so good. Why did OU not sign him? Just guessing that OU just did not have enough ships to include him.

Who knows, maybe the kid just wanted to play for Patrino, aside from having a severe loyalty issue,he's a pretty darned good coach.
Cheers -olives and horseradish, clears the mind.
